Our enrichment programme

We are very proud of our extended curriculum. All Archer students take part in enrichment activities at the end of the school day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to enable them to discover their hidden talents and passions.

Each term begins with an Enrichment Fair when our students have the opportunity to meet with our different enrichment tutors and find out about all of the courses on offer. Students make a Tuesday choice and a Thursday choice for each term.

Here is an example of the kind of choices students were given last year:

Tuesday choices

Choir - Belonging to a choir is an extraordinary experience. You will develop your own musical skills and abilities while being a member of a team with a common purpose. You will have the opportunity to perform in school performances and take part on national and local competitions.

Full Circle Drama Company - There will be so much going on at drama club: loads of brilliant games, improvisation, working in small groups to create adverts/short sketches, working with masks and props, and ….and most important of all…the chance to perform!

Glee Club - If you love to play in a group with other musicians, and enjoy learning new instruments, our music enrichment will be perfect for you. It will be held at the Finchley Youth Theatre and give you the chance to perfect your skills and learn some new ones.

Yoga - Yoga club is a wonderful way to increase your co-ordination, self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem while you stretch and strengthen your body. You will learn new techniques to help you relax and concentrate in a fun and creative environment.

Creative writing - The creative writing club will give you the opportunity to write in a variety of ways, ranging from short stories to haikus to articles. You will get to see your writing published in a real book, to enter competitions with great prizes, and write a monthly blog about life at the Archer.

Cookery - This course will give you the opportunity to hone your cookery skills and experiment. Each week you will prepare a new dish and build up to cooking a meal for the teachers at the end of term. You will start the term with baking before moving onto main meals and desserts.

Football Freestyle - Football Freestyle will be fun and enable you to improve your skills and fitness. You will work with a professional footballer, Konye from Soccer Shop Window, to learn a range of tactics and moves to impress your friends. From headers to ball spins, this is the enrichment for all football fanatics.

Carnival craft - The carnival craft club will be led by a professional dressmaking tutor who specialises in costume design for carnivals. You will develop and perfect your craft and sewing skills to design and create stunning costumes. The term will finish with a fashion show to showcase your work. You will also learn about the culture and spectacle of carnival and the traditions associated with it.

Science in action - This hands-on Science club will enable you to experience science in an imaginative and stimulating way. You will discuss new scientific advancements, take part in and lead scientific investigations and experiments. There will be the opportunity to take part in national competitions with universities and see if you can get recognition for your work.

Art and design - Art enrichment will provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills you learn in lesson time and to experiment with an even wider range of new and exciting skills and techniques. One week you might be taking and manipulating photographs, the following week you might be designing and making a surreal mirror frame… the possibilities are endless!

Fortitude dance company - Fortitude is for anyone who loves to dance, choreograph, perform or just wants to try something new. You will be learning lots of dance routines in different dance styles from Street Dance to Jazz. This dance club will give you lots of chances to be expressive and creative and we will work towards performances so you can show off all your moves!


Thursday choices

Pottery - You will start with the basics, learning how to make a decorated slab based on insects and natural forms before learning how to make, fire and glaze a pinch pot, coil pot and slab pot. Each new project will develop a new skill and decorative technique building up to a final piece. You will also discuss the work of local ceramicists to see what ideas you can borrow!

Circus skills - You will be taught by professional circus artists to develop a range new skills. You will learn a variety of skills such as juggling, unicycling, German Wheel, stilt walking, acrobatics and performance skills. It’s a wonderful creative outlet for those who don’t like art (or do like art!), a physical activity for those who don’t like sport (or do like sport!) and a friendly, lively atmosphere.

Book club - The book club will be the perfect opportunity for you to explore new books, read them together as a group and discuss the themes and ideas explored by the author. Initially we will read all our books on the iPads as ebooks and you will be able to access them from home using the VLE. We will make a group decision about our choice of book, then read some of it together and set tasks for independent reading.

Dance & choreography - Impulse provides you with an opportunity to learn diverse dance styles and genres with a range of musical accompaniments. You will develop your understanding of performing dance and work in groups to perfect and refine your skills. Jazz and complex contemporary contact technique will be our first focus, with the aim to build on your technical and interpretive dance skills.

Orchestra - The orchestra will enable you to extend and build your musical abilities and explore famous musical scores whilst preparing for performances. It will provide you with the opportunity for musical challenge and to play alongside your classmates.

Squash - Led by fully qualified coaches, you will learn the skills and techniques of squash, using the facilities at Stormont squash club. You will also get to experience a competition environment by playing against the others in the group.

The Archer Players - This term, the Archer Players will focus on devising drama techniques, including improvisation, choral movement and hot seating. There will be lots of team work, drama games and performance opportunities throughout this enrichment. We will work on the craft of physical theatre and develop your performance ability.

Picasso Art Club - This enrichment course will enable you to explore a range of arts projects such as works of famous artists for inspiration, still life and observational drawing, working on canvas, abstract art, investigating patterns, collage and much more. You will develop your creative and observational skills using pencils, pastels, charcoal, watercolours and acrylics. The club is led by professional artist Tamara Jovandic Everson who will help to inspire, nurture and support your artistic skills.

Kinder Kitchen - Come along to the Kinder Kitchen, where you will learn how to make a different delicious dish every week, based around up to seven fresh ingredients. You will expand your recipe collection whilst having fun in the kitchen, using the Archer Academy's first-class cooking facilities. Every lesson, you will work in small groups to create a tasty meal, and will be given a recipe card to take home and keep.

Film making - This is a stunning opportunity to learn about film making in a practical and hands on way. Blue Sky Arts & Media are a professional company who will take you on a journey of script writing, learning how to work a camera, getting to grips with lighting and sound, directing and preparing amazing screen make up. You will work on your film this term with a premiere at Easter.

Chinese culture club - The Chinese club welcomes students who are interested in learning more about Chinese history, culture and language. This is a hands-on club, focused on experiencing and enjoying a range of Chinese cultural activities. You will learn the art of calligraphy, basic Mandarin language skills, traditional arts and crafts such as paper-cutting, drawing, painting and card-making, dance and cookery. Your first challenge will be to prepare to celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Archer Academy.
